Nordic Forward: Resilience and competitiveness for 2050

Program 2025 - 2027 Active

The focus in this program is on building robust cross-border value chains, fostering deeptech business ventures and enabling data-driven ecosystems. The aim is to strengthen the Nordic region’s long-term competitiveness and resilience through the application of new technologies, deep-tech and new collaboration structures. The program will support ecosystems and value chain collaboration to solve global and Nordic societal challenges and achieve impact at a systemic level.

We are working towards this program mission through three innovation areas:

Critical Technologies

Critical technologies such as quantum technology, artificial intelligence, advanced sensor technology, biotechnology, and autonomous systems will be crucial for the Nordic region’s ability to address societally critical challenges, strengthen our technological sovereignty, and ensure competitiveness in a global context. This innovation area aims to mobilize Nordic stakeholders around the development, application, and strategic management of such technologies, and facilitate joint efforts where the Nordic region has the potential to take a leading role.

By connecting research, industry, and public actors across national borders, the initiative will promote a more coordinated and resilient Nordic ecosystem for critical technologies. The focus is on increasing the practical implementation and impact of these technologies through joint initiatives, knowledge sharing, and the development of value chains and alliances that can accelerate innovation, commercialization, and deployment.

Smart mobility and connectivity

Mobility systems are fundamental prerequisites for well-functioning societies and international trade and cooperation, and the link between mobility and preparedness is becoming increasingly close. The growing climate and energy crisis, along with security and geopolitical developments, are driving Nordic cooperation in the fields of transport and mobility forward.

This innovation area aims to strengthen innovation collaboration that enables the development of seamless and interconnected mobility and transport systems, where technology, digitalization, and data sharing are key tools. The goal is to promote solutions that both reduce greenhouse gas emissions and meet society’s needs for accessibility, supply security, and energy efficiency across Nordic borders. The work will support the development of green and digital transport corridors, integrated mobility systems and new business models.

Innovation triggers

This innovation area is about identifying and unlocking new ways of working with innovation through experimentation, learning, and the development of methods, tools, and approaches that can accelerate the emergence of sustainable solutions. The goal is to enable continuous rethinking and to challenge established structures by testing new forms of collaboration, processes, and work models that make it possible to implement innovation across sectors and national borders.

By developing and activating such mechanisms, we aim to make it easier for actors in the Nordic region to collaborate, take risks, test, commercialize, and realize innovative ideas more quickly from insight and idea to tangible impact in society and the market. This innovation area serves as a catalyst to mobilize stakeholders, bridge gaps between needs and opportunities, and create space for experimentation with high relevance and transformative potential.
