Background
Airports safeguard mobility, security of supply, and crisis response in a region defined by harsh climates, long distances, and growing geopolitical uncertainty. They are among the most critical assets in Nordic societies. Yet, airport ground operations remain highly vulnerable. They are dependent on seasonal labour, exposed to extreme weather, and increasingly at risk from satellite navigation disruption.
The Nordic Aviation Resilience (NAR) starts by extracting concrete operational lessons from existing Nordic deployments. These insights are used to design a next-generation solution that remains functional even when GNSS is degraded or denied. Instead of producing studies, the project delivers pilots. Within 12 months, the solutions will be demonstrated in live airport environments, with operators in the loop and safety, security, and performance validated in practice.
The consortium:
Yeti-Move, whose autonomous snow removal machinery fleets are already operating at Stockholm-Arlanda and Oslo-Gardermoen
Finavia, operator of Helsinki-Vantaa airport
Swedavia and Boldyn as associated partners
RISE CyberNode, contributing cybersecurity and system resilience expertise
SAMS Norway coordinates the project
Nordic added value
NAR strengthens the resilience of Nordic aviation, reduces dependency on scarce labour, and protects critical infrastructure against digital and geopolitical threats. At the same time, it positions the Nordics at the forefront of autonomous airport operations, turning resilience into a competitive advantage.
Nordic Aviation Resilience is about making every Nordic airport robust, secure, and operational- keeping the runways clear at every airport, every day and at all times.
The project concludes with a clear rollout and scaling plan towards a large-scale Nordic demonstrator hosted by Finavia. This coming phase will also open up for new business opportunities or startups (e.g. spin-offs, new services) in the Nordics.
