The Nordic-Baltic AI Center is one of the five recommendations from Nordic Innovation’s Ethical AI Expert Group launched in 2024. Nordic Innovation has worked with AI and Data since 2021, and the funding decision marks a milestone in this work. Sindre Bornstein, Managing Director at Nordic Innovation explains:
“At Nordic Innovation we are excited that we have been paving the way for the Nordic-Baltic AI Center. This funding decision marks the start of a new chapter in the Nordic collaboration and a milestone in our work within ethical AI. The foundation for this center is built on close collaboration with a broad group of stakeholders and a common drive to ensure that our region becomes a leading voice in how AI is being applied in responsible ways.”
30 million DKK over three years
The Nordic Council of Ministers allocates 30 million DKK over three years to establish the Nordic-Baltic AI Center. The center will be launched in autumn 2025 and organizations from all Nordic countries are participating in the establishment. The ambition is that the Baltic countries shall form part of the center as well.
The organizations behind the application for the establishment of the center are AI Sweden, AI Finland, Digital Dogme, IKT Norge and Almannarómur. The center will be coordinated by a secretariat in Sweden.
Result of the Nordic Ethical AI Expert Group
In 2023, Nordic Innovation brought together a group of 23 experts in the Nordic Ethical AI Expert Group with the aim of developing recommendations on how the Nordics should work with ethical AI. One of the recommendations was to establish a Nordic Center for Responsible AI to support Nordic businesses in developing and adopting AI responsibly and creating a Nordic hub for ethical AI innovation.
“We are pleased to see that the Nordic Council of Ministers has decided to build on the recommendation from the Nordic Ethical AI Expert Group. Cross-border collaboration is a crucial step to make the Nordic-Baltic region a leader in responsible use of AI and to bolster our competitiveness in the years ahead,” says Sindre Bornstein, Managing Director at Nordic Innovation.
