Mobile Positioning Data for Tourism Statistics

Project 2018 - 2021 Closed

Smart phones have transformed the tourist experience. At the same time, smart phones open a possibility to collect data in a new way.

This project addresses the challenges and opportunities within tourism statistics in the Nordic countries. The project aims to:

  • Establish a Nordic network for cooperation and create a thorough understanding of the involved stakeholders.
  • Create an understanding of the legal framework for mobile positioning data. This will contribute to the development of innovative solutions using tourism statistics.
  • Demonstrate the possibilities with a use case and to pave the way for new sustainable business models.

In the long run, the project aims to create a Nordic datahub that will facilitate data gathering, processing and use for the benefit of the tourism industry.

Background

The Mobile Positioning Data for Tourism Statistics project was initiated in 2018 by Nordic Innovation. The motive was to investigate the possibility of strengthening Nordic cooperation in tourism statistics and preparing a specific project in the area.

This resulted in project proposal of a feasibility study from the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth that should investigate the conditions for implementing a major Nordic development project for use of mobile positioning data in tourism statistics and to prepare a proposal for the implementation of such a project.

Read more and download the feasibility study.

The project is part of the Nordic Innovation special initiative Tourism in the Nordics. The project is currently looking for Nordic partners that are interested in taking part in the next phase of this special initiative that will be co-funded by Nordic Innovation.
