The aim of the Next Wave project is to provide infrastructure for a largescale deployment of hydrogen vehicles and mobilize transport companies to use the vehicles. The goal is to stimulate the global technological lead of the Nordic countries by pushing forward the very first hydrogen infrastructure rollout for larger vehicles.

“The Next Wave project has significantly contributed to bridging the gap between visions and reality regarding the transition to emission-free transport. Important work remains, and we have great confidence that Next Wave can play a crucial role in positioning the Nordic region as a pioneer and an attractive market in the upcoming deployment,” says Nina Egeli, Head of Program at Nordic Innovation.
Zero-emission transport between the Nordics and Europe
The project has been running since 2019, and with potentially 100-200 hydrogen trucks on the roads in Norway and Iceland as early as 2025, it is already showing great results.
In the new phase, the project will widen the scope and look further into how to get hydrogen trucks on the Nordic roads and stimulate development of infrastructure by connecting the maritime sector with heavy-duty vehicles. The project will also investigate the opportunities for developing zero-emission transport between the Nordics and Europe through a ‘green corridor’ based on hydrogen trucks and hydrogen ships.
“Next Wave brings together supply and demand, and in this new phase, both land-based and maritime transport. This presents exciting opportunities and brings the Nordic region a significant step closer to the vision of becoming the world's most sustainable and integrated region,” says Nina Egeli.
Background
The Next Wave project (Next Nordic Green Transport Wave – Large Vehicles) is financed under the Nordic Green Mobility program. The project is entering phase 3 which will run until February 2025.
