The Nordic Circular Design Programme kicked off in 2024 as an eight-month training initiative led by Ethica in collaboration with its Nordic partners: Danish Design Centre, Norwegian Centre for Circular Economy, and Cradlenet in Sweden.

In the first round, more than 30 companies and 150 participants joined the program to explore and implement circular design in practice.

“What we liked about this program was the focus on both strategic and development levels. Most initiatives currently available emphasize strategy. This program recognized the need to work on both levels. This has been a really good opportunity for us to link the two areas.”

The Danish footwear manufacturer, ECCO

The program provides companies with practical tools, valuable insights and support to help them develop sustainable, circular business models and products. It is fully aligned with key market drivers, such as the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation.

Designed especially for industrial manufacturing companies, the program is open to SMEs and large corporations alike, provided they have active R&D and design teams. Two dedicated learning tracks — one focusing on strategic business development and the other on R&D — ensure that each team gains relevant, practical knowledge that can be implemented.

“We learned to rethink the design processes, the manufacturing processes, and the customer experience. It was nice that all the companies shared their ideas. That way we got some insight into what the customer experience could be like and how different industries would approach this kind of new philosophies.”

The Finnish company, Exel Composites
