The workshop was opened by Rasmus Malmborg and Thordur Reynisson, Senior Innovation Advisers at Nordic Innovation. They gave a brief introduction about Nordic Innovation and explained how Nordic Innovation work. Then the floor was given to the moderator Marianne Larsson, Director of New Industries and Innovation at Innovation Skåne, who was to take us through a well orchestrated day with two fertile discussions and inspiring presentations.
The workshop was organised as part of our Health, Demography and Quality of Life program running from 2018 to 2021.
The Nordics as a steppingstone
Before the coffee break the first group discussion about Nordic opportunities took place. The discussion brought some interesting views on why to grow your business Nordic. Close culture reduces hurdles, bigger knowledge pool and the Nordics as a steppingstone - funding and network was pointed out as some of the main reasons.
After the coffee break the CEO and co-founder of SidekickHealth Dr. Tryggvi Thorgeirsson talked about his experience with the Nordics. He encouraged companies to enter the Nordics andemphasised that one of the advantages of the Nordic market is the increased opportunities of reaching mature investors and providers. As Dr. Thorgeirsson stated during one of the discussions: “I wouldn’t have built my company anywhere else than in the Nordics.” He advised the participants to seek out accelerator opportunities and as far as possible to develop their product with the buyer to secure the relevance of their product.
Nordic possibilities and difficulties
In the second discussion the difficulties of going into the Nordic region was the main topic. Both barriers and solutions to an easier access to the Nordics where discussed. Finding providers and network, awareness and legal barriers were pointed out as barriers. Were as a platform for networking and collaboration between Nordic companies, stakeholders and facilitators, a joint Nordic governmental effort and accelerator access were discussed as possible solutions to an easier and closer Nordic cooperation.
One of the participants Maria L. Ámundadóttir from OCULIGHT analytics came to learn more about Nordic possibilities and walked away with much more knowledge about the opportunities and the current Nordic collaboration.
”I found the group discussions very interesting and learned a lot about the opportunities at the Nordic market. OCULIGHT haven’t thought about going Nordic but after today’s workshop, we will definitely look more at the different projects and accelerator programs in the Nordic region.” Ámundadóttir explained.
To Ásþór Tryggvi Steinþórsson and Hulda Jónasdóttir from Reon this workshop was an eye opener.
“The Nordic market isn’t as big as the European market, but in this workshop, we have learned how important it is and how it can bring us closer to more opportunities. We don’t have a network in the Nordics so this Nordic collaboration through Nordic Innovation is what we will need if we want to enter the Nordic market”, Hulda Jónasdóttir stated.
Ásþór Tryggvi Steinþórsson supplemented: “The workshop gave a good view over the Nordic opportunities and where to go to if we need more specific information or help”.
After the second discussion Nordic opportunities for Icelandic companies were elaborated by Andri Marteinsson, Director at Promote Iceland and the Nordic possibilities in a broader perspective was explained by Sigríður Valgeirsdóttir from the Icelandic Presidency in the Nordic Council of Ministers.
At the end the workshop was wrapped up by Berglind Hallgrímsdóttir, board member at Nordic Innovation and Managing Director at Innovation Center Iceland, Þórður Reynisson and Rasmus Malmborg from Nordic Innovation.
