A strategic guide to the Nordic Ocean Economy

The ocean economy is one of the most overlooked investment stories of our time. While it covers 70% of the planet, more than 80% of it remains unexplored — not just physically, but economically. New data, better tools, and shifting geopolitics are now unlocking areas that were previously unreachable or too complex to engage.

In this context, the Nordics are uniquely positioned. They control vast ocean territories, have deep industrial know-how, and a long track record of exporting practical ocean innovation. The region is well-placed to lead in the next phase of ocean development — and become a key global hub for capital, talent, and technological solutions.

This webinar launches The Nordic Ocean Opportunity — a strategic investment report that reframes how we understand the ocean economy. It maps the market forces, industrial advantages, and opportunity segments that matter right now.

The report is the result of a multi-year Nordic collaboration under the Nordic Innovation Sustainable Ocean Economy program (2021–2024) — a joint effort by the Nordic countries to advance innovation, investment, and cooperation in ocean-based industries. This regional initiative is part of the broader global momentum triggered by the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2020–2030), following its declaration in 2017.

Launched during the UN Ocean Conference in Nice, the report positions the Nordics as a committed and capable partner in shaping the future of the global ocean economy. It brings forward Nordic insight, leadership, and investment logic — contributing to the international dialogue on how to unlock ocean value in a sustainable and strategic way.

This work is led by FRONTTIER and Nordic Innovation, in collaboration with Danish Ocean Cluster, Port of Hirtshals, North Sea Science Park, Innovatum Science Park, and RISE.
