Nordic Circular Re-trade program for critical construction materials

Project 2024 - 2025 Active

This project aims to develop the Nordic re-trade market for circular critical construction materials in a way that can make the value chains in the construction industry sustainable and make the circular business models for material use and modular building practices profitable and scalable on a Nordic level.
The project will be managed by Nordic Circular Hotspot. Knowledge partners will be:

  • Natural State (NO)
  • PL Hringrasarsetur(IS)
  • R&D FundForward (SE)
  • Center for Circulær Economy ( DK)
  • NEFCO (FI)

Underusage of secondary and circular construction materials

The Nordic construction sector is challenged by underusage of secondary and circular construction materials, components and furniture today. Traditional construction methods favor new and primary materials components and furniture due to regulatory, logistical, market and cultural barriers. The main challenge that is expressed for scaling, industrializing and developing the re-trade market of critical circular material for the construction sector is lack of market access and lack of critical mass of market transactions locally for the re-trade products that are now emerging in local and national initiatives.
Today’s market for reused and circular materials is fragmented, with varied regulations and lack of a unified business models which is hindering sustainable practices in the united Nordics.

Activities and outcome

The project will initiate mapping circular real estate and construction services, materials and resellers of components and market solutions. Sharing experiences, successes and understanding how to build business models across borders. It will also influence public procurement in the different countries by comparing and showcasing best practice. Workshops and desktop studies will identify different business opportunities that can be scaled, commercialized and industrialized in all the countries when an aligned Nordic market for the circulated materials is established. It will also connect this to funding mechanisms for scaling and market entry activity.

Project’s target group

The projects the target groups are stakeholders in the construction industry, including businesses, advisors, suppliers, and developers, alongside policymakers and public procurement.
