The report seeks to “take you behind the scenes” and show glimpses of co-creation and how Nordic Innovation has been working together to develop innovation across the Nordic Region, including insights into programs, media coverage, events and employees’ perspectives.
Nordic Innovation entered the year in the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, through co-creation and by combining new tools, skills and experiences from the previous lockdown, Nordic Innovation succeeded in increasing activities and deliver results throughout 2021.

“The entire globe is combating a pandemic, and we are in the middle of a serious climate crisis. Tackling these challenges involves international co-operation, and the Nordic Region is in a strong position to play a major role in developing future solutions”.
– Svein Berg, Managing Director, Nordic Innovation
Entering a new phase with Vision 2030
2021 was also a year of transition. The three programs under the Nordic Co-operation Program for Business and Innovation Policy: Nordic Smart Mobility and Connectivity, Health Demography and Quality of Life and Nordic Sustainable Business Transformation were successfully completed in 2021, with the exception of a few projects running into 2022. During the program period, 2018-2021, Nordic Innovation has funded and developed more than 100 projects and events in the scope of the three programs.
Alongside the completion of the three programs, Nordic Innovation began working on eight new programs running from 2021-2024. The eight programs are set out by the five Nordic ministers of trade and industry and will contribute to the 2030 vision for the Nordic Region to be the most sustainable and integrated region in the world. In 2021, Nordic Innovation worked on ensuring the operation of the new programs as well as they launched their initial activities.

“Through these eight programs, we can strengthen and align framework conditions to support sustainable economic growth in the Nordic Region”
– Svein Berg, Managing Director, Nordic Innovation
A quick look into 2022
With a point of departure in the eight new programs, Nordic Innovation will build on the foundations laid in 2021 and launch new activities, events and projects to further develop the eight programs. On top of that, Nordic Innovation is working on five special initiatives and a range of events such as COP26, Nordic Circular Summit, World Circular Economy Forum and political festivals in all Nordic countries.
