The aim of this report is to examine innovation instruments and systems that are available in the Nordic Marine Sector; to consider the strength and weakness of the Nordic countries, and to suggest how to enhance innovation and competitiveness of the marine industries through Nordic cooperation. The marine sector in this context is broadly defined, encompassing both primary producers in aquaculture and fisheries, processing industry and support industry delivering technology and services. Innovation is also broadly defined; covering both radical and incremental innovations, commercial, technological, and organisational innovations.

Risks of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and hypertension rise continuously with increasing weight, creating a huge overlap between the prevention of obesity and the prevention of a variety of chronic diseases. New EU-legislation allows the use of weight regulation and satiety-related health claims on foods, if sufficient scientific evidence exists behind the claims. This offers new opportunities to the Nordic food industry.

The objective of this project was to develop a shared Nordic view among stakeholders on how health claims should be used in marketing with the emphasis on consumer understanding and how the new EU-legislation (Regulation (1924/2006) on health claims will be interpreted.

The main objective of the "Nordic Malt House" project was to establish a network consisting of Nordic brewers with the purpose of identifying strengths and potentials in the development of a Nordic malt category. The aim was to develop a democratic business model for malting smaller batches of grain with special characteristics.

High quality restaurants and food experiences are well recognized as important for tourists. Increasingly, as leading restaurants serve local products, focusing their menus on regional specialities, they need to access locally produced food of excellent quality.

The role of food as an agent for improving health has initiated the development of new classes of food - functional foods. Nutrients and other bioactive substances isolated from fish as well as fish in itself can be used as ingredients for functional foods. There are several obstacles to overcome before the potential in fish can be exploited.

In order to gain a competitive advantage in the world marketplace, Nordic industries need to press forward in several critical research areas. For cast load-carrying and work producing components and structures there is a need to integrate efficient FE based analysis tools, reliable information on defect size, shape and location, and expertise on how complex variable amplitude and multi-axial loading influence fatigue damage in cast materials.

The main goal of the project was to establish a long-term working model and project concept for a sustainable arctic tourism development. In order to reach this goal, the current practises of Northern tourism enterprises and their needs – current as well as future - were analysed and compiled. Special emphasis was placed on identifying successful tools and practices to improve the SMEs sustainability.
