Data as the driving force in mobility

In 2023 we finalized an innovation process exploring how to establish the Nordic region as frontrunner in smart connectivity and sustainable mobility.

As a first output, a study was published on developments within the digitalization of the Nordic mobility sector, focusing on personal mobility, road and traffic management, and logistics. The aim of the study was to understand the current state of digitalization within these mobility areas, including challenges and innovation potential. The study also acts as a guide for the next steps in the innovation process.

Following this, Nordic Innovation published a call for proposals by the end of 2023, with the aim of finding 2–4 projects where connectivity and data sharing can help to accelerate the transition to sustainable mobility.

The innovation process was run as an industry collaboration between Nordic Innovation and Demos Helsinki, Halogen, Rambøll and RISE. The initiative is part of the Smart Connectivity program, which seeks to facilitate innovation and transformation within the mobility and logistics sectors through increased data sharing across national borders.

The potential of data is yet to be realized and better data governance mechanisms are needed. The call for proposals is now closed and will hopefully reveal projects with a potential for scaling.

New report points to systemic innovation and transformation at system level

The Systemic Innovation Compass report is about a the method used, the way to handle complexity, to ensure scalability and successful projects at the Nordic level - or where and what is relevant for your transformative endeavors.

The report encourages a systemic approach to thinking and invites the innovation community to apply for funding aimed at establishing ecosystems, rigs, or platforms dedicated to challenge-based, adaptive innovation. The most adaptive way to organise innovation processes is in an innovation ecosystem. The ecosystem should include i.e. the industry, research institutions, public agencies, civil society, and media to handle the complexity.

The Systemic Innovation Compass report is a framework and a repository of ideas where future Smart Connectivity and data sharing projects in mobility can be rooted. The report is an introduction to systemic innovation, and it shows the possibility for addressing mobility and logistics in a systemic way. It also presents a way forward for establishing a systemic mindset and systemic innovation.
Please download and read the reports to gain full insight.

We look forward to launching Nordic mobility projects that will showcase how the systemic approach can be applied in a real life context.
