The European natural stone standards aim to assist producers in product control and documentation as a strategic tool for image building, building consumers trust and business. However, it is not being fully utilized by the the Nordic stone industry that consists primarily of SMEs.

The natural stone sector in the Nordic countries is solely composed of SMEs, generally lacking the capacity or required endurance and resources to participate actively in the standardization processes. The CEN TCs for natural stone (TC 246, TC 128/SC8, TC 178 and TC 125) has suffered from very low participation from the Nordic stone industry since their work started.

The ultimate target of the project is to ensure that the intention of the European natural stone standards, i.e. to assist producers in product control and documentation as a strategic tool for image building, building consumers trust and business, will be fully utilized by the Nordic SMEs.

To guarantee the users a quality in accordance with CPD, essential requirements is also expected impacts of the project. In order to reach these targets, the project will address methods of work, involvement and dissemination activities that will improve the standardization process, the standards and the SMEs knowledge and confidence in the standards.

Several part objectives and activities are identified to support the overall aim:

  • Involve SME to improve standardization work and the standards through combined activities, including establishment/continuation of mirror committees of stone industry associations, research and standardization bodies.
  • Get feedback to be promoted as a common Nordic voice during the revision of the standards
  • Cooperate at international level in the standardization sector and securing Nordic participation
  • Develop innovative communication tools through the partner consortium so as to assist the stone producers and users in all Nordic countries in better understanding and use of the standards.
